Creating a halftone image

Postby Alicia » Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:35 pm

I was asked how I created a halftone image in another post and thought this was a better place for the info. ( Here's the original post. viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1178)

I used Photoshop and here's what I did.
1. In PS, open your image file.
2. Convert it into GREYSCALE. IMAGE>MODE>GREYSCALE
3. Adjust your resolution to 300. IMAGE>IMAGE SIZE...
4. (Adjust brightness and contrast to your greyscale.)
5. Convert into Halftone. IMAGE>MODE>BITMAP
6.Fiddle with the adjustments until you get what you like.

I USED THESE SETTINGS FOR THE DOG IMAGE:
Specs: > Output : 1000 ppi (The higher resolution will result to a sharp and better ellipse output, at 300 resolution but the dot shape can become squared or pixelated.
Method : Halftone
Frequency : 22 per inch (I don't think you can get much larger than this without losing detail.)
Angle: 30
Shape: round ( I was doing some research and read that using eclipse is a better choice for screen printing.)

Here's some good links to get you started. Hope someone can use the info.

Interesting. Thanks for the info! One more question; you used a standard desktop printer as well?

Yes, just a standard printer :-)

Here's the detail of the halftone round screen. You can see there were some dots that were too small to print. It's a 220 screen and Diazo emulsion burned for 10 min.

This transparency is an example of the halftone done in lines. I haven't printed it yet but, after seeing the detail I got in the round one, I think it'll be OK.

You totally simplified it for me! Thanks sooo much. Other sites kinda give you the run around and try to sell halftone printers but i kind of knew that there was probably an easier workaround.

I'm so glad it helped you Miranda. I don't think you can do a more complicated halftone color separation without RIP software but the single color is certainly doable. Make sure and post your first halftone!

Thanks to you I am going to do a halftone print. I have some questions. did you see anything saying to burn the halftone print for twice the amount of time? I thought I had seen that somewhere but I am not certain. I would be curious to know how long you burned your image for.

The halftone with the stripe is super cool. Love to see how it prints

Since I've only done a few screens, it's hard for me to make a real accurate comparison. FWIW, I used Diaso liquid emulsion and burned the halftone at 10 min. and it came out fine. From all the halftone research I've done I don't remember reading that it needs to burn longer.

I saw your Bob halftone, looks awesome! Can't wait to see the final result.

Thats the same emulsion I am using. Thanks for the quick response. I currently burn my images for 6-6:30 min. I know that with the fine dots it will need to burn for longer. So I think your suggestion of 10 min will/should work just fine for my application. Thanks and I cant wait to make it :)
